I almost fell off the couch earlier today when I saw that I am a finalist for the Best of Blogs (BOB) awards. It wasn't because I am so freaking funny, and it wasn't because I felt so deliciously honored (although I am). I read through the list and started to die laughing because one of my bestest friends in the whole world is a finalist in the same category. How random is that? We don't really have the same audience (hello darlinks...), and I don't even think anyone even knows we are friends, until now.
Oh, no. Our evil conspiracy to take over education blogging is revealed.
Not really.
I became friends with Amy in grad school. Well, eventually we became friends. You see, I am sort of shy. By that I mean, I am totally paranoid and think everyone hates me. I suck at making friends. I sit around thinking I look like a big dork, but everyone is really thinking I am intimidating, stuck up, or, worst of all, one of those wanna-be poet girls. Amy fell into the latter category.
One day, Amy taught a Blogging 101 lesson to our class, and they loved it. I had started my blog a few months prior to her lesson, but I didn't know Amy had one too. At first, I felt a bit competitive. I'd discovered this rad thing called "blogging" and wanted to share with the world, but Amy was already on it. But then I started reading Amy Loves Books.
Her writing is so lovely and poignant and hopeful. I just fell in love. We had so much in common. But I still didn't talk to the girl.
Along the way, she started reading my blog too. We sort of got to know each other through our blogs instead of through the contact we had in class every day. Strange, isn't it? Backwards. Later, she commented on one of my posts and proposed going to brunch. The rest, as they say, is history.
Hubby knows he can always go fishin' on Saturday because I have brunch with my "girlfriend" (must be said in a sing-songy, 3rd grade kind of way). We chose to teach at similar schools (although, I haven't had the pleasure of 3 subpoenas in one semester...). Hell, if I ever have a child, she'd birth it (with her multi-talented doula-ing ways).
So, I won't say who you should vote for in the education category, but I will say I am in some damn fine company.
Thank you!
Note: I do write poetry. But I am not one of those girls. Perish the thought. Now.
i can't think of anything better than being nominated alongside my poetry-writing, wife of a fishing dude, "girlfriend". and you got my vote my dear.
